Wow. Looks like I missed a couple great games, and a brilliant example of how ridiculous pitching statistics are.
Game one picked up with the LFT’s down 2-0 in the first innings, from Sunday’s run-shortened game. Gabriel Benitez started the 2nd inning and pitched 3 innings, giving up only a hit and two walks. Angel Castro pitched 3.2 innings, surrendering just a run on 5 hits. Great pitching guys!! Nicholas Martin then came in and retired one batter, to finish up the 8th inning.
With the Flying Tigers down 3-2 in the bottom of the 8th, Ryan Strieby hit a grand slam to center field, giving the FT’s a 6-3 lead!
Here’s where the fun begins. Freddy Dolsi enters the game and promptly gives up 2 runs on 4 hits while recording only one out. Ed Clelland is brought in with the score 6-5 and quickly retires the final two batters for his first save of the year, and the Flying Tigers win!
What’s so odd about the pitching statistics? After brilliant pitching by Angel Castro and Gabriel Benitez, Nicholas Martin (the guy that only had to retire one batter) was credited with the win, simply because he finished the inning in which the FT’s took the lead. Makes sense right? It gets better. Freddy Dolsi is credited with a “hold” because he didn’t completely blow a 6-3 lead. You can’t make stuff like that up. Meanwhile, the two guys the pitched the majority of the innings, and pitched quite effectively I might add, receive nothing.
On to game two!
Louis Marte pitched a very good 4 innings, giving up only 1 run on 4 hits and 2 BB, and struck out 6! Wise and Witt pitched the final 3 innings, giving up only a run each (Witt’s being unearned), but the good guys lost by a score of 3-2. Louis Ott led the offense by going 2 for 3 with his first homerun of the year!
