Rumor Mill

By Deran | March 31, 2008

I’ll say one thing about the Tigers’ Organization: they sure know how to keep a secret. Getting roster information is like pulling teeth. I have a couple more avenues I’m pursuing and I HOPE to have an actual roster for the LFT some time this afternoon.

Now, on to a few rumors. I’ve heard from several people now that when the Tigers signed Aaron Fultz (headed to Toledo), it knocked Matt Rush back down to Erie, which then knocked Freddie Dolsi back down to Lakeland. Now, before everyone finds their nearest I-4 bridge to jump off, the guy wasn’t that bad last year. And repeat players usually pitch much better their second year.

Pedro Cotto was presumed to be heading to Erie, but with the addition of Jeff Frazier to their roster, I’m hearing Cotto may be sent to Extended Spring Training. This is good news in that he’ll likely be hanging around the ballpark, but this is not good news for Pedro. Unless he’s injured, I take this as the organization saying “we like you, but we don’t have a place to put you”. If they don’t find a need for him by the time EST is over, they may have to cut him. Let’s hope that isn’t the case.

Be sure to not take any of this as gospel. As we’ve learned in years past, they make a lot of tweaks up until the first game. But for now I don’t have a roster yet and wanted to fill some space. So take these for what they’re worth.

You stay classy, San Diego.

I have not been impressed with Dolsi.

According to papers in Erie, Matt Rusch is indeed in the pen for the Seawolves again.

It’s a bummer for Cotto that he got bumped from Erie, but I’d think that it’s a safe bet he’ll be the first one to get a call if there’s an injury on one of the MiLB squads. I think the fact they didn’t just outright release him now shows that the Tigers like having Cotto around. I think he could maybe have a future in coaching if he were ever interested.
