Cuts/Promotions

By Deran | March 28, 2008

Busy day yesterday. I received some information yesterday morning that seemed very preliminary and incomplete, so I chose not to post it. I felt it would have been disingenuous, but other sites that received the same information are posting it, so I figured I’d get our readers caught up. Keep in mind, none of this has been confirmed.

CUT: Mark Haske, Chris Homer, Collin Mahoney, and Eleazar Aponte. No big surprises here.

RETIRED: Kyle Sleeth. No surprise here, either. A former 1st round draft pick, Kyle had Tommy John surgery a year after being drafted and just never quite panned out. I figured the organization would release him soon anyhow.

Now, on to some good news.

CLETE THOMAS: Needing another outfielder while Curtis Granderson is on the DL, it appears Clete Thomas has earned a spot on the 25-man roster. Clete was a Lakeland Tiger back in ‘06 and played at AA Erie last season. Congrats to Clete for having a great spring!

CASEY FIEN: It also appears that Casey has made Detroit’s bullpen. Casey pitched for low-A West Michigan last year and was due to pitch for the Flying Tigers this summer. He was scheduled to pitch with the minor league team this weekend but was told that this was no longer the plan. It appears he may travel with the big league club for their exhibition series in Houston this weekend, and then on to Detroit for the season opener.

The organization has not yet confirmed any of these rumors, but I expect them to happen, with possible exception to Casey Fien’s situation. I’m pretty sure he has made the team but I’m still a little unsure of that to this point. I also don’t believe this is the full list of cuts. If I receive anymore information, I will post it.

How nuts would it be if Fien actually makes the jump from West Michigan to the Tigers?!

I think Fien is probably on the Houston Trip to save the arms for Monday in case of a blowout.

Actually since they decided on Lopez instead, Fien is back in Lakeland with the rest of the minor leaguers.

I’m hoping that sometime Sunday you’ll have the Flying Tigers’ roster.
