Casey Fien makes an impression

Tom Gage / The Detroit NewsFien is a right-hander who pitched at West Michigan last year and whose arm has made a good impression on Leyland this spring.“That was the guy I was talking about when I said I’d gone over to the minor-league field to watch someone,” Leyland said. “I’d seen someone over there I liked. I liked what I saw the other day, and wanted to see it again.”
Fien was 6-1 with a 3.10 ERA at West Michigan last year. He was the 20th-round draft choice of the Tigers in 2006.
“He’s not going to be on the team, right now,” Leyland said. “But I want that memory of what I saw on my mind, so if he’s doing well, and I don’t care where he pitches, I can say, ‘Send me that guy.’ He could be a candidate at some point.
“That’s how we found Randy Tomlin with the Pirates one year. Then he went 8-0 (actually 9-0 in his career) against the Mets.”

Great news for Casey! Unfortunately, this likely means that he will skip Lakeland and head straight to AA Erie. Hopefully, for selfish reasons, this doesn’t happen too much. We should have the vast majority of the 2007 MWL Champion White Caps roster this summer. Right now I still have no idea who has made the team. I have a pretty good idea on the majority of it but none of them have been clearly indicated. A lot can change between now and then so I’m going to reserve my projected roster until it is finalized, which should be happening in the next couple days.

I watched Casey Fien pitch on Sunday and Tuesday for the Tigers.
This guy is the real deal. Fastball [94-95] touched 97. Great movement on his pitches and excellent change.
Very poised,intelligent and aggressive pitcher with a lot of confidence.
I can see what Leyland and Hernandez like about him.
This guy has no fear and I expect him to be with the Tigers early this season. He is the type of player that can make a difference.

Had the opportunity to watch and meet CF. Find him to be a talented and special young man.
He is a throwback player from a past era. Reminds me of those players who played for the love of the game. Blue collar approach to the game. Brings back a lot of good memories.
I can see him pitching for the Tigers this year.

Word started spreading yesterday around camp from other player’s that Casey Fien may be added to the opening day roster for the Tigers.
